IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026: Data as the Foundation for New AI and Driver Applications

Vehicle data, telematics, apps, and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly intertwined. AREALCONTROL supports technology partners in this process as a data and integration partner—providing information from vehicles and operational processes, as well as the necessary interface expertise.

From September 15 to 20, 2026, the international transportation and commercial vehicle industry will gather at IAA TRANSPORTATION in Hanover. Vehicles, powertrain technology, and hardware have traditionally been a major focus. At the same time, software, connectivity, driver apps, and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important.

After all, a modern truck or van is no longer just a vehicle. It is also a continuous source of technical and operational data.

This is precisely where a significant part of digitalization begins.

AI first requires reliable data

There is a lot of talk about artificial intelligence these days. In practical use, however, the algorithm alone does not determine the usefulness of an application.

The data foundation is the key factor.

Where is the vehicle located? What are its current operating conditions? What information does the vehicle’s electronics provide? Which jobs have already been completed? How are driving times, downtime, and estimated arrival times developing? What information does the driver need—and what data, in turn, is generated by the driver’s work?

Only when such information is structured, reliable, and available via defined interfaces can further applications be built upon it.

Vehicle data becomes information. Information can lead to decisions.

Vehicle, driver, and operational process converge

This development becomes particularly interesting when different data sources are linked together.

Telematics, for example, provides location, movement, and vehicle data. Mobile applications integrate the driver and their work processes. Order, route, or dispatch data establish the operational context.

AI systems can then analyze and evaluate this information and use it for new assistance functions.

Potential applications range from intelligent driver information and optimized workflows to situation-specific alerts and automated decision support.

However, the following applies:

AI can only work with information that is available to it in the appropriate quality and structure.

Vehicles, telematics, driver apps, dispatch, ERP systems, TMS, and external applications must not be viewed as separate islands in the long term.

True value is often created only through their interconnection.

Exchange and Innovation at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026

AREALCONTROL will use the two days of the IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 trade show to engage in professional exchange with technology and development partners.

The focus will be on current approaches related to vehicle data, driver apps, and AI-powered applications.

Not every innovation originates within a single company—and not every technology involved will later bear the name of its technical data provider.

For us, what matters most is that reliable data leads to functional applications.

After all, digitalization doesn’t start with an app’s interface, and AI doesn’t start with an algorithm. Both begin with robust data.
